Come to the Water/Jazz Genesis: Sharing the Rich Black Experience in SF

Come to the Water: Sharing the Rich Black Experience in San Francisco (second edition) has updated listings of restaurants, historic sites, cultural facilities and personalities in the world's favorite tourist attraction.

Visit JazzGenesis: San Francisco and the Birth of Jazz is an exhibition in the Visitor Information Center of the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau which provides a new paradigm for considering the birth of the music. It looks at the nexus between the political and business initiatives of 19th century African-Americans in San Francisco and their patronage of the arts, the presence of Buffalo Soldiers at the Presidio and the impact of the intercontinental railroad. Spotlighted are eight still-extant buildings which housed jazz clubs as early as 1907, the first African-American to conduct at a presidential inauguration, the first African-American woman to sing at the White House, the first African-American to make a music recording, the origin of "animal" dances and the producers of the first jazz record by a black record company. It is an example of culturally-responsive content which makes an impact on the achievement gap. The Visitor Information Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. It is located adjacent to the cable car turnaround at Powell Street and Market Streets and just outside the exit from Powell Street BART. Youth Service America Launches Two Mini-Grant Programs
to Support Global Youth Service Day Projects

Disney Minnie Grants
$500 for Service Projects Led by Children Ages 5-14
The Walt Disney Company and Youth Service America are excited to announce grants of up to $500 to support child-led service projects. These grants support children (ages 5-14) in planning and implementing service projects in their community. Teachers, older youth (15-25), and youth-serving organizations are also eligible to apply, if they engage younger children in planning and implementing the project. A significant part of the service must take place on GYSD 2009, April 24-26. We particularly encourage applicants to address the environmental issues and to seek to empower children as young citizens through their projects. 0; Applicants can use the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a reference and review past grantees’ projects from all over the world on our website. Applications are welcome from all countries. Applicants from India, China and Russia are especially encouraged to apply. While grant information is made available in Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, applications will only be accepted in English (an online translation tool is available at the YSA website).. State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant
$1000 for Teachers & Service-Learning Coordinators
With generous support from the State Farm Companies Foundation, Youth Service America is offering the annual State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant for youth-led community improvement projects across the United States and Canada (Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick provinces only). These grants of up to $1,000 support teachers and service-learning coordinators in engaging students (ages 5-25) to implement service-learning projects for Global Youth Service Day, April 24-26, 2009. We encourage semester-long projects that are launched on Martin Luther King Day on January 19, 2009 and extend through Global Youth Service Day.

C-SPAN StudentCam

Dear Education Professional,

C-SPAN would like to tell you about an opportunity for middle school and high school students (grades 6-12). C-SPAN's "StudentCam" is a national video documentary competition. This year C-SPAN asks students to create a 5 to 8 minute video documentary that addresses an issue of national significance. Students must present more than one point of view and include C-SPAN video in their documentary.

In this historic election year, StudentCam offers a great way for all students, not just those of voting age, to get involved in the presidential election. With this in mind, the theme of this year's competition is: A message to the new President: What is the most urgent issue for the new president to address and why? The deadline is Inauguration Day -- January 20, 2009.

We are awarding a total of $50,000 in cash prizes. The top winning videos will air on C-SPAN, and can be viewed at www.studentcam.org. Next spring, the C-SPAN bus will also visit a number of the schools with winning videos.
