Manovill Holocaust History Fellowship

HCNC is proud to announce this exciting new program for Bay Area teens!

MHHF is a unique opportunity for 11th and 12th grade students to study the Holocaust at a college level. Five fellows will be selected to draw connections to other genocides and gain the tools to be advocates for building tolerance in the Bay Area. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, students will be awarded 60 hours of community service and a $500 stipend.

As a MHHF Fellow you will:

• Connect with local Holocaust survivors


• Work in the HCNC archives


• Become an activist for education and tolerance

Are your weeks already full with sports, school work and other activities? The fellowship allows participants to choose when they want to work in the archives, conduct research and work on the thesis project.

Journey to Poland and Israel with Shalhevet

“We are the last generation that has the opportunity to learn and see through the Holocaust survivors’ eyes”

Shalhevet ("flame" in Hebrew) is a transformative journey to Poland and Israel for Bay Area High School Juniors and Seniors. Inspired by March of the Living, Shalhevet is a way for local Jewish teens to participate in a program specifically tailored to the educational and cultural environment of the Bay Area.

• Learn about the thriving Jewish culture in Poland before WWII and today.


• Witness the concentration camps through the eyes of a survivor traveling with the group.


• Meet with Polish and Israeli teens to get a taste of their lives.


• Experience Israel: the people, the culture and the homeland.
  


• Experience Israel: the people, the culture and the homeland.


• Examine today’s political and geopolitical challenges in Israel.

What's new with the Stock Market Game this year? Weekly Webinars
Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, registered teachers will be able to participate in FREE, 90-minute, interactive webinars from the comfort of their office or home. Each webinar will offer a testimonial from a SMG Field Consultant or securities industry professional, a tour of the SMG website, and a question and answer period.

Wednesday afternoon webinars, 45 to 60 minutes in length, will be centered on a variety of specialty topics, including: How to get started with SMG in your classroom, how to plan your SMG lessons, how to do effective research, short selling, buying on margin, InvestWrite, and others. Email reminders will be sent weekly with webinar registration instructions. Participate as often as you like!

NAEP Data The May 2008 issue of American Economic Review: Papers and Procedures reported the National Assessment of Educational Progress in Economics results. The stock market game is noted as “the only activity that shows a positive and significant relationship with test scores…presumably this activity reinforced economic ideas learned in general economic courses.” (p544).

Since The Stock Market Game represents an overwhelming share of the market, we can be proud of the positive impact the SMG has on the economic knowledge of American students. Holocaust Center Student Volunteer Program

The Next Chapter

The Next Chapter is a volunteer program for 11th and 12th grade students who want to learn more about the Holocaust. Teen volunteers are matched with Holocaust survivors who they will interview and record their oral histories. Also, the teens will work with research partners at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, Poland to try to determine what happened to each survivor’s family, community, and town after the war.

Students will meet once a week at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco to learn about the history of the Holocaust, conduct research, and complete the oral history essays. The program will run from November through May.

Students will receive community service credit for their participation.

C-SPAN StudentCam

Dear Education Professional,

C-SPAN would like to tell you about an opportunity for middle school and high school students (grades 6-12). C-SPAN's "StudentCam" is a national video documentary competition. This year C-SPAN asks students to create a 5 to 8 minute video documentary that addresses an issue of national significance. Students must present more than one point of view and include C-SPAN video in their documentary.

In this historic election year, StudentCam offers a great way for all students, not just those of voting age, to get involved in the presidential election. With this in mind, the theme of this year's competition is: A message to the new President: What is the most urgent issue for the new president to address and why? The deadline is Inauguration Day -- January 20, 2009.

We are awarding a total of $50,000 in cash prizes. The top winning videos will air on C-SPAN, and can be viewed at www.studentcam.org. Next spring, the C-SPAN bus will also visit a number of the schools with winning videos.
