History Project: Saturday Seminars for History Teachers

Dear Friends of the History Project at UCD,

Our Saturday Seminars are back by popular demand!

Join us on October 11 for “Local History, American History,” the first in this year’s series. Historian Louis Warren and three practicing teachers will explore local connections to the national narrative. The content of Dr. Warren’s talk and the model lessons will be particularly useful for 4th, 5th, and 8th-grade teachers and of interest for all other history lovers and teachers.

Where: Sutter Square Galleria, 2901 K Street in Sacramento

When: Saturday, October 11, 2008. Registration, continental breakfast, and networking from 8:30-9:00 am; Lessons to noon

Tuition:$45 for this workshop alone; $250 to attend all 6 seminars.

Holocaust Center Student Volunteer Program

The Next Chapter

The Next Chapter is a volunteer program for 11th and 12th grade students who want to learn more about the Holocaust. Teen volunteers are matched with Holocaust survivors who they will interview and record their oral histories. Also, the teens will work with research partners at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, Poland to try to determine what happened to each survivor’s family, community, and town after the war.

Students will meet once a week at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco to learn about the history of the Holocaust, conduct research, and complete the oral history essays. The program will run from November through May.

Students will receive community service credit for their participation.

Offering strategies for integrating drama into the social
studies/history curriculum, this workshop engages
participants in theater games that teach geography and
role drama, effectively transporting students to other
cultures and time periods. As part of daily instruction,
these dramatic methods are designed to deepen students’
comprehension and spark their interest.

Lenore Blank Kelner, Actress, Director, Author, Educator
Since 1981, Kelner has directed her own educational theater company, Interact Story Theatre which performs in schools, museums, libraries, and theaters all over the United States. The recipient of the 2004 Creative Drama Award from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, Kelner serves as an education consultant to the Maryland State Department of Education and school systems nationwide. She has trained thousands of teachers in how to integrate drama into everyday classroom instruction and has worked with students in all grade levels. She has also written three books on drama and education. Her most recent book, A Dramatic Approach to Reading Comprehension, co-authored with Rosalind Flynn, was published by Heinemann in 2006.

Come to the Water/Jazz Genesis: Sharing the Rich Black Experience in SF

Come to the Water: Sharing the Rich Black Experience in San Francisco (second edition) has updated listings of restaurants, historic sites, cultural facilities and personalities in the world's favorite tourist attraction.

Visit JazzGenesis: San Francisco and the Birth of Jazz is an exhibition in the Visitor Information Center of the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau which provides a new paradigm for considering the birth of the music. It looks at the nexus between the political and business initiatives of 19th century African-Americans in San Francisco and their patronage of the arts, the presence of Buffalo Soldiers at the Presidio and the impact of the intercontinental railroad. Spotlighted are eight still-extant buildings which housed jazz clubs as early as 1907, the first African-American to conduct at a presidential inauguration, the first African-American woman to sing at the White House, the first African-American to make a music recording, the origin of "animal" dances and the producers of the first jazz record by a black record company. It is an example of culturally-responsive content which makes an impact on the achievement gap. The Visitor Information Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. It is located adjacent to the cable car turnaround at Powell Street and Market Streets and just outside the exit from Powell Street BART. Youth Service America Launches Two Mini-Grant Programs
to Support Global Youth Service Day Projects

Disney Minnie Grants
$500 for Service Projects Led by Children Ages 5-14
The Walt Disney Company and Youth Service America are excited to announce grants of up to $500 to support child-led service projects. These grants support children (ages 5-14) in planning and implementing service projects in their community. Teachers, older youth (15-25), and youth-serving organizations are also eligible to apply, if they engage younger children in planning and implementing the project. A significant part of the service must take place on GYSD 2009, April 24-26. We particularly encourage applicants to address the environmental issues and to seek to empower children as young citizens through their projects. 0; Applicants can use the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a reference and review past grantees’ projects from all over the world on our website. Applications are welcome from all countries. Applicants from India, China and Russia are especially encouraged to apply. While grant information is made available in Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, applications will only be accepted in English (an online translation tool is available at the YSA website).. State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant
$1000 for Teachers & Service-Learning Coordinators
With generous support from the State Farm Companies Foundation, Youth Service America is offering the annual State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant for youth-led community improvement projects across the United States and Canada (Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick provinces only). These grants of up to $1,000 support teachers and service-learning coordinators in engaging students (ages 5-25) to implement service-learning projects for Global Youth Service Day, April 24-26, 2009. We encourage semester-long projects that are launched on Martin Luther King Day on January 19, 2009 and extend through Global Youth Service Day.
